Brad Blackburn made his first appearance on The Rear Naked Choke since signing a multi-fight deal with the UFC!

Brad’s UFC debut is July 19 against James Giboo, on the Spike TV card the same night as Affliction Banned.

Joe flew solo on this one, but Brad was nice enough to essentially do the entire show with Ted sidelined. Joe & Brad went very in-depth on all of the issues surrounding the IFL’s pending demise and his being part of the first wave of fighters from the promotion to be gobbled up by Dana White and Co.

There was plenty of talk for the hardcore MMA fans on this one, which is a bit of a change from the normal lighthearted format.

KIM ROSE & DEBI PURCELL: WOMEN’S MMA ON THE RNC!
Kim’s first interview since beating Kim Couture
Debi announces her ProElite fight

It was a show dedicated to the ladies of MMA when Joe & Ted welcomed Kim Rose and Debi Purcell to The Rear Naked Choke.

This was Kim’s first interview since her bloody unanimous decision victory over Kim Couture. Debi took a timeout from the hijinks to reveal her next fight, which will be against Rosie Sexton of England on August 17 (at least that is what Debi says, and she is bad with dates).

Here is a cool thing to do:

First, click above and start listening to the show, on which Kim Rose appears first. In the meantime, start to watch the fight with the YouTube volume off while you’re listening to our interview with Kim Rose, who broke Kim Couture’s jaw in two places five seconds into the match.

Here’s the vid:

…Continue it for Round 2:

& then Round 3:

Our take:

For two fighters making their pro debuts, this was an exciting fight with surprising technical level. Kim Rose, sponsored by our friend at Fightchix, more than lived up to her nickname of The Little Pitbull, while Kim Couture did a great job considering the severity of her injuries sustained right off the bat. Couture reportedly will need to have her jaw wired shut for five weeks.

From MMAWeekly:

Little did anyone know at the time, Couture not only suffered a broken nose in the exchange, but the bone-crushing overhand right, according to her Xtreme Couture teammate Brice Ritani-Coe, actually split her lower jaw bone in the middle of her chin.

So Kim Rose is pretty bad-ass. She also is an identical twin whose sister fights fires, and not other women.

Debi Purcell told us she would fight anyone anytime. Then Ted asked, “Would you fight me?” To which Debi immediately replied, “No!” Of course, this means she has never met Ted, but she did call him a “Boobhead”.

Since we caught her around workout time, Debi had tons of energy and expended it upon us. She recapped her career, which has stalled at times because there was simply no one willing to fight her. She talked about how she called out Gina Carano from Day One, and that she wants to fight Tara LaRosa after the Sexton fight.

When you listen, you’ll learn that the Purcell-LaRosa fight almost came off as an IFL bout, and you’ll find out why it did not happen. It might have something to do with Marco Ruas.

Debi is getting married very soon, and we hope that she remembers the dates of her wedding and her fight, and does not get them confused. Golly gee, she has an awful lot of energy. She is doing her web stuff with Fightergirls so give her a holla.

Who has your back when the #($*& goes bad?

  • Gina Carano (67%, 8 Votes)
  • Tara Larosa (33%, 4 Votes)

ABOUT CLARISSA CHUN

Chun competes at 105.5 pounds and has been spending a lot of time preparing for the Olympics by training MMA with the likes of MMA pros Donnie Liles and Keith Wilson.

She won the 105.5-pound finals by upsetting reigning U.S. champion Patricia Miranda. After the upset, she gave much of the credit to her MMA training.

Of course, her focus is on taking home the gold in Beijing, but a future in MMA is something she won’t rule out, and she talked about it with Joe & Ted, although she admitted “I don’t like to get punched in the face.”

Clarissa and her Team USA Wrestling mates will be in the NYC area Thursday, June 19 & Friday June 20 in an effort to raise funds so their families can see them compete in Beijing. GET INVOLVED! FUEL THE DREAM!

Spread the word about this awesome athlete and her great teammates.

ADRENALINE RUSH:Rory Markham, Mark Miller & Bart Palaszewski
All are fighting on the Adrenaline MMA card June 14
SOMBER NEWS: IFL CANCELS 8/15 EVENT

without comments

Rory Markham, Mark Miller and Bart Palaszewski talked about their upcoming appearances in the Adrenaline MMA card at the Sears Center outside of Chicago on June 14 on the latest installment of The Rear Naked Choke, Featuring Joe & Ted.

Listen to the Show!

Bart kicked off things by singing the theme from The Wonder Pets cartoon. No joke. A talented artist inside the ring and cage, Bartimus also proved to be a top-flight crooner of childrens’ songs. Yes, he also talked about his upcoming fight with Adrenaline MMA and is looking to rebound off a three-fight losing streak.

This is a big step for Bart after 12 straight fights in the IFL. Bart, Mark and Rory all were thankful that the IFL gave them an opportunity to fight with Adrenaline MMA - that was before the news that the promotion has canceled the August 15 event.

Mark was not willing to venture out into singing the Wonder Pets song, but said Bart had recently introduced him to the popular cartoon. Rather than sing, Mark immediately declared his favorite Wonder Pet, but you’re going to have to check out the show to find out who it is. We cant give away everything right here, but we will at least tell you that the guys introduced him to The Backyardigans!

Rory gave his take on the news in MMA the past couple of weeks, with Gina Carano and Thiago Alves missing weight and then winning their respective fights, and Scott Smith getting stopped by Robbie Lawler’s errant finger-poke to the eye at the NJ EliteXC event.

A long-time teammate and friend of Matt Hughes and Lawler, Rory not only revealed the late change to his Adrenaline opponent, but also did The Choke Out in one of Ted’s best efforts yet on our favorite segment!

All three show guests have been on The RNC before and were nice enough to come back mere days before their fights. Everyone (not just Rory) was asked to “weigh in” about the recent missed weigh-ins (it’s always best to get the fighters’ take compared to the media’s outlook).

IFL CANCELS AUGUST 15 EVENT On Tuesday afternoon, the day after the latest installment of The RNC, the IFL announced the cancellation of its August 15 show at the Izod Center in New Jersey.

Unless an investor comes in to infuse money and/or buy the IFL, unless other promotions strike a deal to co-promote, things are bleak. Boss Jay Larkin made that very clear on a conference call with reporters.

There is another round of layoffs within the staff, allowing the company to operate for as long as possible in the hopes that some deal can be made to breathe life into the IFL.

Should it not come to fruition, the IFL likely will file for bankruptcy, thus marking the official end.

Of course, this news is particularly hard on The RNC crew, which has intricately worked with the tremendous IFL staff for quite some time. If it was not for the opportunity and cooperation afford us by the IFL, we would not even have a show to bring you.

With the help of key people in the IFL, most notably Jerry Milani, we were able to forge into MMA. Others who deserve special kudos are Greg DeSanctis, Katie Eskin, Josh Anderson, Joe Favorito, Shannon Knapp and Kurt Otto. Please count this as a sincere and heart-felt thanks.

It is a sad and difficult week for MMA. The IFL has been a serious promotion with many innovative ideas and creative people willing to put themselves on the line. Although not perfect, they succeeded (and may again down the road) in putting together consistently excellent and exciting fight cards, top-to-bottom. The focus always was on the quality of the fights and fighters.

Ask just about anyone who paid to go to an IFL show and they’ll respond that the fights were very entertaining and the matchups were of high quality.

Down the line, these are the aspects that will carry the day for a successful MMA promotion. But it’s apparently not enough right now. It remains to be seen which promotion will push the competition over the top to actually compete with the UFC and create a shift in the dynamic of MMA.

Let’s face it: Right now, the UFC still does not have real competition because it is able to dictate. That will be the thing that has to change before the MMA market really opens up. WHAT’S NEXT? The RNC will forge ahead. We recently made the adjustment to broaden our horizons in our MMA coverage, bringing our unique approach with us. While we hope things change and the IFL rebounds to become the next Apple, we’ll keep getting bigger and better.

And we’re always looking for your input. TELL US WHO YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON THE SHOW! As you read this, Producer Debbie is working on the next show. No one is confirmed yet, but let’s just say that we’re looking a lot more at the athletes in Women’s MMA! BAS RUTTEN on KIMBO SLICE to Joe & Ted:
“HE WAS LUCKY THE REF DIDN’T STOP THE FIGHT”
+Also: The RNC covers all the promotions from here on out!

with one comment

BAS RUTTEN talked about his protege, KIMBO SLICE, on The Rear Naked Choke, Featuring Joe & Ted.

“He was lucky the ref did not stop the fight,” Bas told Joe & Ted in the candid and animated interview.

Listen To Bas on The Choke Now:

Bas was referring to the end of the second round, when Kimbo was being grounded-and-pounded by James Thompson. Regarding the result of the fight, Bas said he felt that considering Kimbo’s minimal professional experience and training, he thought it was a good result.

This was a ground-breaking show for The Rear Naked Choke, as Joe & Ted used this show as the jumping-off point for their expanded coverage of all MMA promotions. Of course, this remains the No. 1 place for IFL news - but now fans of other MMA promotions can look forward to hearing about the backgrounds of their favorite fighters, trainers and personalities.

This show featured Joe & Ted talking about the WEC card, which included the featherweight bout between “The California Kid” Urijah Faber and “Lil Evil” Jens Pulver, and the remainder of the EliteXC card that was televised on CBS.

There was a great debate about Gina Carano, who was impressive in pounding Kaitlin Young but for the fourth time in six career MMA fights weighed in over the limit. The crew is diligently working to get Gina on the show. Did you know that Ted sat next to her dad, Glen Carano, at the EliteXC event? Ted went as a fan, Joe stayed back and criticized the CBS coverage along with Producer Debbie.
