Matt “Suave” Horwich and Brad “The Hillbilly Heartthrob” Imes kick off IFL Fight Week, joining Joe & Ted tonight as the get ready for their IFL fights on the Mohegan Sun card Friday, May 16.

Matt will battle an old friend, Joey “Coyote” Guel, at middleweight, while Brad was a late replacement for Branden Lee Hinkle and gets a heavyweight title shot against Roy “Big Country” Nelson.

This was our last studio show before the in-person throwdowns in Connecticut.

Matt is making his first appearance back in the ring (and on The RNC) since losing his IFL middleweight title Feb. 29 to Ryan McGivern in Las Vegas. That means it’s also his first go-round at both since becoming a married man – he tied the knot the day after his defeat.

Hillbilly Heartthrob Brad pushed his MMA to the next level when he was a finalist in the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter 2 in 2005, dropping a split decision to Rashad Evans. Although he stuggled in going 0-3 in the UFC, Brad has rebounded nicely and has been winning consistently. He trains at Miletich Fighting Systems with the likes of Ben Rothwell and Tim Sylvia.

The Gunderson Gurgle
Mark Miller’s Nicknames

We’re Marching through March – the best month in the history of The Rear Naked Choke.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING AND SPREADING THE WORD! PLEASE KEEP IT UP!

Last week, big-time RNC fan and IFL lightweight John Gunderson joined the guys and discussed his injury status and the impending surgery on his knee that will keep him sidelined for at least a half-year.

Guns is now forced to cater full-time to soccer moms at LA Boxing. Hear him explain why, and hear how he almost escaped Ryan Schulz’s guillotine choke using a gurgling trick he learned from Bas Rutten, along with what he thinks about the whole Couture/Fedor controversy.Besides being Ted’s new passion, do you know what Geo Caching is? Ted fills us in about this growing niche activity in the first of two middle segments.

In the second segment, we are reminded how much Ted hates Riz’s music and ponders how they ever, ever became friends. Kitch wonders the same thing all the time. Riz is nothing if not persuasive. After calling out Kitch on the air about not knowing who Peter Murphy & Bauhaus are while they were battling the Doodlebops in Vegas, Kitch actually went out onto iTunes and bought the latest Bauhaus album, entitled “Go Away White”. He reports, “I actually like it, despite myself.”

Of course, big-time fan that he is, Joe did not even know about the album. Pfft. One up for The Kitch.

Other topics include Joe’s obsession with Strat-O-Matic baseball and how he managed to win a big ass trophy that his wife HATES.

Finally, producer Debbie, fed up with Joe talking about Strat, got Mark Miller on the line. Mark talked about the solid base of fighters at Midwest Combat, his stunning knockout of Josh Neer and his total indifference to ring girls. Find out why a machine gunner works at a gym, too.

Plus – Ted introduced a new segment with Mark. We need your help naming it!!! Drop us a line at TheRNC@joeted.com or shoot us a myspace.

Also, get your ass out to the theater and see our buddy Sean Faris’ movie, Never Back Down. And then come back and listen to his last appearance on The RNC!

vegas time

It’s time for Vegas.

The Rear Naked Choke will be there to give you all the special insight into the IFL season-opening event at The Orleans on Leap Day!  Listen live for shows on Wednesday, Feb. 27, Thursday, Feb. 28 and, of course, for the ringside live stream before the throwdown on Friday, Feb. 29.

As always, the guest list will be fluid.  Because of the time difference in Vegas, we’ll not be on our usual Eastern time schedule, but we’ll at least try to keep it close for the live participants.  If you have the chance to log on while the show is live, jump into the interactive chat room and enjoy an extra-special show experience.

You can always catch the shows at your convenience, because they’re available for listening or downloading 24/7.  There is an interative show player right here on the www.joeted.com site or you can go to the Talkshoe page.  Do not forget at add us to your myspace and give us top-friends love!

HISTORY LESSON

The last time we went onsite, it was at Mohegan Sun in Conn. for the last IFL event.  This is how the guest lists from those shows panned out:

First night: We had Roy “Big Country” Nelson and Antoine Jaoude, who were two days from squaring off for the IFL heavyweight belt, in addition to Benji Radach, who was readying to fight Matt Horwich for the middleweight title.

Second day/night: For the first time, we streamed live from the weigh-in, showing our great versatility.  At the weigh-in, we sat down with Ken Shamrock, Ian “The Machine” Freeman, and Pat Miletich!  Not content with one show, we did another one later from the hotel, and had the IFL’s famed ring announcer, Tim Hughes, co-host with Joe & Ted and had an incredible sit-down with Shawn Tompkins and IFL co-founder Kurt Otto.  Yes, this guest list was all in the same day.  Not a misprint.

Fight night: Streaming live from ringside, Kurt Otto could not resist coming on again, this time with a different posture – to talk about the card and take Joe & Ted’s predictions (Joe finally beat Ted!).  Then Carlos Newton sat down before Randy Couture came in, made a huge crowd gather ’round, and made his second appearance on The RNC!

WHAT TO EXPECT

Expect Joe & Ted to be prepared to take on whomever is ready to sit down with them.  A lot is being worked on behind the scenes.  There is a new movie coming out called “Never Back Down, starring Sean Faris, who is expected to be around the event.  We’ll see if Sean will sit down.  What about Elisabeth Nuesser from FightChix?  Then there are the usual suspects – your favorites.  And we’ll always find some new wrinkle to make it exciting.

MONDAY:
GIANTS BACK JOE’S GUARANTEE, WIN SUPER BOWL!
IFL guests RYAN MCGIVERN & DENNIS DAVIS
Feb. 29 Previews Continue!

For those who checked it out, Joe guaranteed the Giants were going to pull off the stunning upset of the Patriots in the Super Bowl.  OK, he got the score wrong, but who cares?  Best Super Bowl ever, and the Eli Manning scramble/David Tyree catch off the helmet immediately goes down as the single-greatest play in Super Bowl history and Giants lore.  GO GIANTS!

Back to the IFL on Monday night, the guests on The Rear Naked Choke were Ryan McGivern and Dennis “The Piranha” Davis, both of whom will be fighting on the IFL’s Feb. 29th card at the Orleans in Las Vegas.  See how the IFL bills our show and others’.

Ryan, who competes for Miletich Fighting Systems (MFS), has been thrust into the middleweight title bout against Matt “Suave” Horwich because our friend, American hero Tim Kennedy, has been called to duty for the U.S. Army.  Tim is an Army Ranger.  We wish him safety and are thankful he and others in the military and their families make the sacrifice to keep peace.  Read his open letter – he said he should be back fighting later this year, which is great news!

Ryan’s last fight was  a stunningly dominant knockout of Fabio Leopoldo at the IFL Team Finals in Florida back in September.  Although he is taking this title fight on four weeks’ notice, Ryan is known as perhaps the top-conditioned athlete of the rugged Miletich camp.  We’re not talking about the best person at your local gym here, we’re talking about the top conditioned guy at the factory.  He’s always in fighting shape.

The RNC found out what Ryan likes to do when he is not training.  And listen right at the beginning to learn the nickname Pat Miletich has bestowed upon him.  Maybe Tim Hughes will use it when he introduces Ryan in Las Vegas!

Dennis is fighting at featherweight against Ian Loveland.  While this fight is listed as a preliminary bout, those in the know realize it is shaping up to be one of the most exciting matchups on the loaded card.

Dennis, who is with Xtreme Couture, mentored Ian, who is with Team Quest.  Did Dennis teach him everything he knows?  How do you build up animosity for someone you worked hard to develop?  Hear Dennis’ take on the RNC, and then to enhance your knowledge, check out Ben Fowlkes’ article on the IFL site, and also Ben’s previous story that gives the view from Ian’s side.  You should also check out Ben’s blog.  We have had Ben on the show a few times, but not for a while.

Find out all about it on The Rear Naked Choke, Featuring Joe & Ted!  We’re streaming live Monday night at 9:30 Eastern, 8:30 Central, 7:30 Mountain and 6:30 Pacific (also, Tuesday at 02:30 GMT for those outside of North America).

BIG NEWS

We’re goin’ to Vegas, baby!  That’s right, The RNC will be there in Vegas to get you ready for the IFL event on the 29th!  We’ll do the usual drill – (heavy Brooklyn accent) “A couple two, tree shows” before fight night, loaded with great MMA guests!  Then, of course, the ringside live stream right before the throwdown!  Being in MMA hotbead Las Vegas, the pressure will be greater than ever to bring you the best of the IFL.  This is where you find out how it all works, people.

Check us out live or download anytime!  If you log on through TalkShoe, you can interact via chat with other listeners.  You also can listen by phone by calling 724-444-7444, punch in show ID 25116, and then #.  If you have a TalkShoe pin, you can put it in at that time, or you could just press 1 and # to listen.

SHAD LIERLEY TALKS TOES, BELTS
MATT HORWICH HAS CAULIFLOWER EAR
MARIO SPERRY IS “THE ZEN MACHINE”

Shad Lierley’s toe is fine. Fine enough to allow him to fight for the IFL featherweight belt.

Matt Horwich has the IFL’s middleweight belt and cauliflower ear.

Mario Sperry is the “Zen Machine”.

The three were guests of Joe & Ted on the Rear Naked Choke over the past couple of weeks. Shad and Matt were on the week after Mario.

Shad will battle Wagnney Fabiano on April 4 in the Meadowlands for the featherweight title. Matt puts his middleweight title in the line Feb. 29 at the Orelans in Las Vegas against Tim Kennedy. That same night, Mario’s camp will make its IFL debut against Xtreme Couture, mentored by Shawn Tompkins.

Shad is coming off a now-famous broken toe – the toe broke through the skin. He talked about the injury and how his buddy (and ours), Bad Brad Blackburn, was nowehre to be found when the blood was spewing all over the place. OK, so we might be embellishing a bit, but we did push Shad to bring Bad Brad back east to corner him for the title fight.

Shad also talked about the famed fight of the year of 2007 with Chris Horodecki and said he still would love a rematch, even at 155 pounds, so our thoughts that Shad’s move to featherweight would shelve such a potential rematch might be premature, and hope springs eternal!

Just before we left Shad, he threw the phone over to Reese Andy. Reese’s gym houses just about all of the former Seattle TigerSharks. Get an update on what Reese is doing to get Shad ready!

Matt then came on and Ted hit him right away (not literally). He wanted to know what Matt thought of himself against Anderson Silva. Matt broke it down in his own way after he adjusted the phone (and sent Joe into hysterical laughter) so he could hear the guys. He said in his first appearance on The RNC that his goal was to eventually be at the level to fight Silva. Politics and contracts between promotions will prevent that, though.

The spiritual Horwich, who was reached at Matt Lindland’s Team Quest, recently was a star at the Portland TrailBlazers game, along with teammate Ryan “The Lion” Schultz. While he did not get into too much detail about that, Matt did talk about his hair styles, gave his thoughts on some secrets as to why he has never been knocked out despite taking some massive blows, and his social networking. We asked him to add us on mySpace and make us a top friend, and he did it! THANKS MATT!!!

note: The same offer remains open to all. We’re at www.myspace.com/rncjoeted and we love being in your top friends! It helps the show grow!

Mario sized up his camp entry. The Zen Machine talked about how he got to the IFL. He gave his thoughts about the system, and the MMA world in general.

Mario has been traveling constantly in the months since arriving in the USA from Brazil. It was exceptionally nice of him to take the time to join Joe & Ted. Mario was so concerned that the battery on his cell phone was going to run out during the interview that he made them call him back on a different line! That’s class, ladies and gentlemen!

SWITCHING GEARS

If you have not seen the show “Fight Science” on the National Geographic channel, then stop what you’re doing and make a point to set the DVR for it RIGHT NOW.

Bas Rutten, Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz and Dean Lister are run through a series of experimental scientific tests, and the results stunned the compilers of empirical data.

The only down side was that if you knew nothing about MMA organizations, you would think the UFC was the only one in existence. This was an observation made by Ted and confirmed by Joe.

We have seen in the past that the UFC is not above leveraging their footage and general access to mainstream and other media under the conditions that the written or televised piece keep exclusive mention to their promotion. No one from The RNC has checked into confirming that was the case for this episode of “Fight Science” because we really do not care that much, other than to just levy our positive and negative criticism of the show.

Speaking of Bas Rutten, a hearty RNC congratulations goes out to “El Guapo” for being named the VP for fighter relations at the IFL (from “Fight Science” you can see he’s still in fighting shape!). Fear not, he’ll still be bringing his top-notch analysis to the IFL’s telecasts. Now Bas gets to use those endless connections to help bring talent into the IFL and help create sensible and exciting fighter and camp matchups.

Additionally, Kurt Otto will be able to focus more on the ring-related aspects. As the new head of the business side, Jay Larkin, said last week, the team concept changing to the camp vs. camp setup means we’re not so much talking about a league except in official name. Without a league, there is no sense of having a commissioner. The good thing is, you’ll still be able to hear Kurt, Bas and everyone involved in the IFL inside and and outside of the ring right here on The Rear Naked Choke!

More big news this week was the announcement that the April 4 card will include a total of three title matches:

Featherweight (145 pounds): Wagnney Fabiano defends vs. Shad Lierley

Welterweight (170 pounds): Jay Hieron defends vs. Mark Miller

Light Heavyweight (205 pounds): Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko defends vs. Jamal Patterson

We already have had on Jay (“Nice playa, nice!”), and we’ll eventually have on everyone on that list. We’ll also keep focusing on the Feb. 29 card and will continue to have guests from that lineup!

Too insane for TIM KENNEDY, business as usual for “BIG COUNTRY” ROY NELSON

But first, check out the IFL’s sharp new logo. Sah-weet!!!

Sharp new IFL logo
Now, back to the show…

Joe & Ted can be hard to keep up with, even for an Army Ranger. Tim Kennedy joined Joe & Ted for zombie talk in preparation for his Feb. 29 middleweight IFL title fight with Matt Horwich. It is the third straight iron fist the enigmatic Horwich will face, coming off Grand Prix wins over Brian Foster and Benji Radach to take the belt.

(Tim Kennedy, after beating Elias Rivera Dec. 29)

Joe & Ted prepared Tim for the awkward style of Horwich by making him as uncomfortable as possible. Part of it was talking about The Spinning Back Claw, which must be seen to be appreciated. Kennedy rewarded the guys with an invitation to his potential victory party in Las Vegas (provided Joe buys the hamburgers). Las Vegas is the hometown of Roy “Big Country” Nelson, who is a man of firsts (and fists).

Roy is the first heavyweight champion in the history of the IFL (see how he did it). He was the first guest in the history of The Rear Naked Choke (well, the first one we had after the name change). Depending on the order of the fight card, he might be the first fighter to successfully defend a belt.Listen to Tim and Roy, and check the rest of the archives for the coolest show in MMA. Joe & Ted run it fast and loose.

COUPLA THINGS:

Shad Lierley is going to fight for the featherweight title on the April 4 Meadowlands (New Jersey) card against Wagnney Fabiano. If form holds true, you’ll be able to hear both Shad and Wagnney size up their fight on The Rear Naked Choke. Xtreme Couture is now part of the IFL. Our pal for whom the company is named, Randy Couture, is in a dispute with the UFC and its owners, with the IFL involvement possibly being an issue in a suit that apparently was filed last week.

The competing IFL team is from the Xtreme Couture camp, which is where the fighters train. The IFL is not using his full name or likeness in any advertising in any way (outside of the Xtreme Couture camp branding).

Many of those fighters are IFL athletes with existing contracts. Shawn Tompkins, the former coach of the Anacondas, is the mentor. Randy Couture is a trainer, but he is not a signed IFL coach like Pat Miletich, Renzo Gracie or Matt Lindland (who always has to remind Matt Horwich to bring his cup).

Shawn is one of Randy’s top guys and a business partner of his. We have enjoyed having Randy, Shawn and Xtreme Couture athletes like Jay Hieron (nicePLAYAnice) and Chris Horodecki on The RNC in the past and look forward to having them and their colleagues on in the future, as their involvement with the IFL continues to build.

(Shawn Tompkins in between Joe & Ted)

Finally, we’re not doing a show on Martin Luther King Day, but we’ll instead do it Tuesday, at the usual time. Check it out at 9:30 pm Eastern, 8:30 Central, 7:30 Mountain, 6:30 Pacific, or 2:30 GMT (Wednesday on the other side of the Atlantic frickin’ Ocean). You can listen to the show while watching Australian Open tennis with the volume down!

LATEST: Ryan “The Lion” Schultz & Jay Hieron

UP NEXT: Roy “Big Country” Nelson & Tim Kennedy

Ryan “The Lion” Schultz and Jay Hieron joined Joe & Ted on The Rear Naked Choke fresh off their title-winning performances at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. They talked about their championship fights. A little. But you can get that almost anywhere, or even from just watching the fights.

What you cannot get anywhere else is what they gave Joe & Ted.

Does Ryan (pictured above in red trunks, fighting Chris Horodecki for the title) really try to look like a lion? Has he ever had a couple too many beers before a van ride to the airport with Joe & Ted? Where is North Platte, Nebraska, and who is the toughest guy from that small town?

Listen and find out. Get some laughs while doing it, and get to know the first lightweight champion in the history of the IFL right here on www.joeted.com!

What about Jay (pictured above, getting his IFL welterweight champion’s belt) ? Find out what it will take for Jay to agree to co-host the show, and with whom he will co-host. Find out his real name, and why he changed it. Live through the gut-wrenching decision he had to make in his personal life just weeks before the welterweight title fight victory over Delson Heleno, and listen as he lifts spirits and describes the origination of the greatest catch phrase in MMA!

There also was breaking news on The RNC about the first title defenses of Ryan The Lion and Jay. Find out who they’ll fight, when they’ll fight them and where it will take place. And listen up to get their assessment of their opponents!

UP NEXT

Coming up Monday, January 14, it’s new heavyweight champion Roy “Big Country” Nelson and middleweight title contender Tim Kennedy.

The live stream is 9:30 Eastern, 8:30 Central, 7:30 Mountain, 6:30 Pacific, and 2:30 GMT Tuesday.

Big Country knocked out Antoine Jaoude on Dec. 29 at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut to take the heavyweight belt. Roy was the first guest after the show was re-Christened as The Rear Naked Choke, and he also joined Joe & Ted in person on the show a couple of nights before his title fight. He will take on Fabiano Scherner, fighting in front of the hometown fans in Las Vegas on Feb. 29.

Tim also fought at Mohegan Sun and pounded out a quick win over local favorite Elias Rivera. He will battle Matt Horwich with the middleweight belt at stake on the Leap Day Vegas card. This will mark Tim’s second appearance on The Rear Naked Choke.

Did we mention Tim is an American hero who is an Army Ranger but somehow does double-duty as an MMA ass-kicker? Visit our mySpace page or go to www.joeted.com to listen to the show. We encourage live participation, and you can catch the live stream while interacting with other listeners and fans, so check it out.If you’re going to be on the road (or at the mall, or at dinner), you can listen by phone. Or you can download any show at any time.

Recent Guests: Couture, Radach, Lierly, Kennedy, FightChix chic Elisabeth!

November has been the best month ever for The Rear Naked Choke!

Thanks to you, the fans, we’ve already set a new single-month high for traffic just halfway though November. Here’s a quick chronological recap of how we got here this month:

The first show of the month was on the first day of the month, when Joe hosted solo from the IFL hotel and had on Matt Horwich and Antoine Jaoude, both of whom were getting set to fight two days later, and came out winners to advance to battle for the respective IFL middleweight and heavyweight belts.

The next night, Bad Brad Blackburn sat in for Ted next to Joe. They had unbeaten (but injured) stud Reese Andy in first (Reese did Ted’s part of the opening intro). Carlos Newton stepped in and made a bold prediction about the John Gunderson-WaggneyFabiano match, and then Horwich grabbed the floor for a minute to explain why he was overweight at the weigh-in a few hours earlier. Bad Brad wasn’t buying his excuse.

Gunderson then joined the show and was none too pleased by Newton’s remarks when Joe & Bad Brad passed them along. Shortly after Guns sat down, Jay Hieron joined the fray, and could not get over the fact that Bad Brad was co-hosting.

Ted made it into the mix for the Saturday show from ringside at the Sears Centre outside Chicago. This amazing show was kicked off by the unmistakable voice of IFL ring announcer Tim Hughes, and kept rolling with IFL CEO and co-founder Gareb Shamus.

It kicked into another gear when the electric Renzo Gracie joined Joe & Ted and then went over the top when, to everyone’s shock, Randy Couture sat down for a few minutes at ringside! On hand to corner Hieron, this was either the first or one of the first exclusive interviews Couture had given since he recent departure from the UFC!

Marco Ruas, the King of the Streets, gave the guys some time, and then one of the First Ladies of MMA, Shannon Knapp, sat down. Newton also joined the show for a second straight day.

After a travel day, Joe & Ted were back at it again Monday, Nov. 5. Fresh off his quick knockout win, middleweight Benji Radach stepped aside from a family function to give his thoughts about beating Brent Beauparlant, and looking ahead to his belt showdown with the enigmatic Horwich.

Once again, thanks Benji, and here is an official “Happy Birthday” to your bro from The RNC!

As if things could not get better, on the Nov. 12 show, news was just hours from becoming official that Shad Lierly would be fighting Chris Horodecki for the IFL lightweight belt Dec. 29 at Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. All over the rumor, Joe & Ted were the first to get Lierly to talk about the rematch of what most MMA fans considered the fight of the year.

The witty Tim Kennedy, who will be on the preliminary bout card that night against Elias Rivera, gave the guys some time.

Elisabeth Nuesser, the founder of the awesome and smoking-hot FightChix clothing line, lit it up at the end! Ted has Elisabeth pegged as a sultry celebrity lookalike – find out whom!

Thanks for listening, and keep checking back for improvements to the site. You can use the links to comment or give suggestions. And do not forget to get your FightChix stuff. NY Pitbulls: Owings on religion, Patterson does “Rocky” on TRS

Erik Owings went off about religion, nutrition and Brazilian chics, while Jamal Patterson reminisced about growing up in North Jersey and laid out what it takes to have a full-time job and still kick some IFL ass in the latest edition of The RON Show, Featuring Joe & Ted: Mundane Family Entertainment. The teammates on the NY Pitbulls of the International Fight league (IFL) joined the guys Monday night for a 66-minute spectacular that can be heard right here. Owings shocked Joe & Ted, admitting his mySpace is not very serious, but went on to give multi-layered opinions on religion and nutrition. The 155-pounder from Kentucky speaks fluent Portuguese, which comes in handy with the girls on his annual trips to Brazil. Oh yeah, and we should mention he is fighting Savant Young on August 2 in the Meadowlands, where the IFL semifinals will be taking place. The Pitbulls take on the Tokyo Sabres, and the Los Angeles Anacondas meet the Quad Cities Silverbacks. This was the fourth and final feature show for the IFL semifinalists, and Patterson closed it out like Mariano Rivera in a playoff game. Jamal will face Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko of the Sabres, who joined us July 16, in his semifinal match in the 205-pound class. Should The Janitor invoke Ivan Drago before the fight and tell Jamal “I must break you” as he said to Joe & Ted, then Jamal will be ready with his Rocky-esque response. Tune in.

Listen to the Show!!
