As if the UFC’s initial foray into Virginia for UFC Fight Night 20 was not stacked enough, it appears The Ultimate Fighter Season 7 champion Amir Sadollah will be taking on Brad Blackburn in a welterweight match.

A source close to the negotiations told me the bout has been agreed to and should be signed by early next week.

At UFC 105 in Manchester, England on Saturday, Randy Couture, Dan Hardy, Michael Bisping and Ross Peason all came up big winners.

Couture won a narrow decision in the main event against Brandon Vera, putting him into the mix for a title shot at light-heavyweight.  Hardy is in line to fight Georges St-Pierre after beating Swick in a welterweight contender match.

Joe’s latest Examiner.com piece is a feature on the Nov. 7 match between Marloes Coenen and Roxanne Modafferi:

USA Olympic Hockey coach Herb Brooks famously said it: “Great moments are born from great opportunity.”

The opportunities, let alone the great ones, are few and far between for female fighters in mixed martial arts. On Nov. 7 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., Coenen and Modafferi will rematch on the under card of the Strikeforce event headlined by the heavyweight fight between Fedor Emilianenko and Brett Rogers, and televised by CBS.

Our Joe Rizzo took on the Machida Era in his Newark Examiner recap about the main event of UFC 104.  Here is a taste:

The Machida Era nearly ended before it started.

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida earned a narrow unanimous decision – if there is such a thing – over Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to retain the UFC light-heavyweight champion’s belt.

The fact is Machida won 48-47 on all three judges’ cards.

The reality is the majority in attendance did not agree with the decision, which was greeted with significant boos from a crowd that chanted Machida’s name at times throughout the early portion of the fight but later appeared to be pulling for Rua, the former Pride champion.
